With Moss stating on numerous occasions that he believes this will be his last season in New England, what are the chances that McDaniels goes after him next season? Will Moss is getting up there in age, no one can deny that he is still a play-maker and one of the best in the league. I wouldn't mind seeing Moss end his career in Denver. He has seemed to mature during his time with the Patriots and he really hasn't had any "behavior issues" the last few years (the whole missing practice thing was blown out of proportion).

I know that we are all excited for the current season to get underway, but I thought that this might be worth discussing. Any thoughts? Moss seems to be sold on the idea that the Patriots will not extend his contract because they "don't pay". I would be willing to bet that he is right and he will be visiting a great deal of teams come next off-season. Why not Denver?

By Patrick Saunders
The Denver Post

Your Denver Broncos will be in no-man's land this season, waffling somewhere between lousy and mediocre.

Hey, don't shoot me! I'm just the messenger, passing along the national vibe.

Sports Illustrated, for example, predicts the Broncos will finish 7-9, third in the AFC West. Fox Sports forecasts the same, but has a few positive things to say: "One huge bright spot: the apparent gains QB Kyle Orton has made in his second year in (Josh) McDaniels' offense, both in accuracy, demeanor and overall knowledge.

The team also appears better equipped to handle things defensively, where the defensive line appears stronger and the secondary is the best position, top to bottom, on the field."

The Sporting News is not nearly as kind. TSN predicts the Broncos to finish 4-12, last in the AFC West behind the Chargers (12-4), Chiefs (9-7) and Raiders (5-11). The Sporting News also asked 32 NFL reporters to vote for the best team in each division. The Chargers received 30 votes, the Broncos just two.

In this month's ESPN Magazine, a computer formula was used to spit out this: The Broncos will finish third in the AFC West with an 8-8 record, in front of only the Raiders (5-11). ESPN's computer picks the Chiefs — yes the Chiefs — to win the division with a 9-7 record. Hmm ... looks to me like that computer is missing a chip or two.

There is some good news, or sorts, for Broncomaniacs. Pro Football Weekly senior editor Mike Wilkening looked into his crystal ball and predicted the Broncos will finish second in the division behind the Chargers.

"Broncos will exceed expectations again, but Chargers will probably be too tough to overcome in division-title race," writes Wilkening.

My prediction? I think SI got it right. A 7-9 record and third in the AFC West is realistic, but I wouldn't be shocked to see the Broncos drop to 5-11.

Trivia time

When was the last time the Broncos failed to win at least five games, in a non-strike season? (Answer below)

Polling

An ongoing Denver Post poll asks readers which team will win the AFC West. The Chargers, with nearly 60 percent of the vote, are the overwhelming choice. The Broncos are second with nearly 33 percent. The Raiders (about 5.2 percent) are third, followed by the Chiefs (2.6 percent).

Actually, it's nice to see Broncos fans taking off their orange-colored glasses long enough to gain a realistic perspective. Quotable

Steve Berthiaume of ESPN's "Baseball Tonight" makes the bold statement that he would take the Rockies' Carlos Gonzalez over Cardinals' superstar Albert Pujols to start a team:

"This year, we've seen Gonzalez make diving 'Web Gem' catches in the outfield, hit towering home runs, steal bases and use that speed to go first to third. The kid can fly. He might be the closest thing in the game right now to a true "five-tool" player. He's in Colorado, which means he doesn't get as much publicity as he otherwise might, and gets overshadowed by the Pujolses and the even the Pandas of the NL. But you go ahead and take those guys if you want. I'll take CarGo."

Then again, I heard ESPN talking head Mike Greenberg refer to Gonzalez as "Cargone" the other morning on the radio.

In case you missed it

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger still has a ways to go to earn back his teammates' trust. For the first time since 2007, the Steelers did not elect Big Ben as one of the team's captains.

Roethlisberger is under suspension for the first four games this season for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy following his second sexual assault allegation in less than a year.

Pittsburgh's captains this year are receiver Hines Ward, tight end Heath Miller and linebackers James Farrior and Keyaron Fox.

Trivia answer

The Broncos finished 4-9-1 in 1971 under coach Lou Saban.
